Манастир Ђурђеви ступови је задужбина Стефана Немање, а
касније и краља Драгутина и налази се на брегу изнад Новог Пазара, у крају
старе Рашке. Храм је посвећен Светом великомученику Георгију, а градња је
завршена око 1171. године. Манастир је имао важну улогу у средњем веку, Растко
Немањић ( Свети Сава) ту је примао своја прва духовна знања, а у манастиру је
сахрањен краљ Драгутин. Црква Светог Ђорђа је прва грађевина „Рашке школе“, где унутрашњост
цркве припада свету византијске уметности, а њен спољашни изглед је близак
облицима романичке архитектуре. Манастир је напуштен крајем XVII века, а више
пута је рушен и разаран ( последњи пут 1941. године), да би се кренуло са
обновом 1960. године. Ђурђеви ступови су 1979. године унети на УНЕСКО-ву листу
светске културне баштине (са целином Стари Рас и Сопоћани).
The Monastery of Đurđevi Stupovi is an endowment
of Stefan Nemanja, and later of King Dragutin, located on a hill above Novi
Pazar, in the region of old Raška. The temple is dedicated to St. George the
Great Martyr, and its construction was completed around 1171. The monastery
played an important role in the Middle Ages. Rastko Nemanjić (Saint Sava)
received his first spiritual education there, and the former King Dragutin was
buried in this monastery. The Church of St. George is the first building of the
Raška School, where the interior of the church belongs to the world of
Byzantine art, while its external appearance is close to the forms of
Romanesque architecture. The monastery was abandoned at the end of the 17th
century, it suffered great devastation being demolished on numerous occasions
(the last time in 1941), before its reconstruction which began in 1960. In
1979, the Monastery of Đurđevi Stupovi (Pillars
of Saint George) was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List (with the complex
of Stari Ras and Sopoćani).
