ГОЛУБАЧКИ ГРАД / THE GOLUBAC FORTRESS

Римљани су штитећи северне границе царства у првом веку н.е. подигли утврђење са обе стране Дунава, на месту данашњег града Голубца, под називом Vico Cuppae. У каснијим временима, римско утврђење је било порушено, па је крајем 13. и почетком 14. века подигнут средњовековни Голубачки град на брежуљку 4 км. низводно. Голубац је грађен лепезасто и састоји се од три дела: предњег, задњег и горњег града (са цитаделом). Чини га укупно 10 кула и две велике колске капије. О настанку имена града постоји више легенди. Према једној легенди, у Шешир кули била је заточена византијска принцеза Јелена, која је због туге и самоће гајила голубове, и по голубу град доби име Голубац. Друга легенда  нам говори да је град добио име по лепотици Голубини која је одбила удварање турског паше, а он ју је за казну везао за пусту стену која је вирила из воде. 

Protecting the northern borders of the empire in the first century AD, the Romans built a fortification on both sides of the Danube, on the site of the present day town of Golubac, called Vico Cupae. In later times, the Roman fortification was destroyed, and at the end of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th century, the medieval town of Golubac was erected on a hill 4 km downstream. The Golubac Fortress is fanlike-shaped and consists of three parts: the front, the back, and the upper town (with the citadel). It has a total of 10 towers and two large carriage gates. There are several legends about the origin of the town’s name. One legend has it that the Byzantine princess Helen was held captive in The Hat Tower, who due to her sadness and solitude kept doves as pets, thus the town was named Golubac after a dove (golub). According to another legend, the town was named after the beautiful girl Golubina, who refused the courtship of the Turkish pasha, and in order to punish her, he tied her up to a barren rock sticking out of the water as punishment.
